Sitting in a folding wooden and canvas chair, Ursula Von Rossbach folded her legs and rested her clasped hands in her lap. She is attired casually in a simple black blazer coat with matching slacks and polished shoes, complemented by a simple white T-shirt bearing the Time Split title graphic emblazoned across her chest. That same logo is part of a portrait of herself from the film of the same name. Ursula did spot modest makeup in an effort to be as presentable as possible, given her punk hairstyle and her few affectations in the form of nose and earrings.
There were two angled camera units, one facing her and the other facing her interviewer, Hollywood Reporter, Clara Channing. The interviewer is rather plainly attired in a simple yet elegant blue women’s business suit and matching heels, her dark brunette hair fashioned in a practical fashion.
Clara: Good evening and welcome to the Hollywood Reporter! I am Clara Channing and with me tonight is one of the stars of Splat Media’s “Time Split” Ursula Von Rossbach as Erica De Lange! Thank you for making time for us out of your busy schedule, Ms. Von Rossbach.
Ursula merely nods her head cordially.
UVR: It is agreeable to be here.
Clara: So tell us a bit about Time Split and your character, Erica De Lange.
UVR: Time Split is a tale involving time travel and displacement, naturally, and while not getting into spoilers, I play a significant part with some rather talented actors and actresses, namely Griffin Hawkins as Teddy Knight, Morgan Payne as Janice Thorn, and…. Griffin Hawkins as Theodore Knight. Erica De Lange is a woman of means and wealth who seeks to increase her standing and fortune in the world. Cupidity and elitism are hallmarks of the character, which some would argue as not being too far from myself in that regard. She seeks the power to change that which she cannot, but desire without the tempering of wisdom can often lead us down paths that are less than noble to achieve our goals.
Clara: Very interesting. What drew you to the role of Erica? Did you seek out Splat or did Splat find you?
The Lady Terminator looks off for a moment in recollection before returning her attention to Clara.
UVR: Initially, I was curious about the acting field as it seems like an interesting option for work between projects and events. I submitted an application as many do, assuming it was highly unlikely that I would be offered such work. To be perfectly frank, I am a large, muscular woman who’s singular charm resides in her ability to cut promotionals in a wrestling ring and hurl people with great velocity across a twenty by twenty foot square.
Clara: I can see that. That jacket does nothing to hide your guns at all.
Ursula lifts her arm and flexes it, a bulge forming beneath the fabric of her suit. Clara nods, her eyes registering slight awe.
Clara: Do you have your clothes custom tailored to fit those enormous weapons you call arms?
UVR: I have three tailors. My formal wear is made by tailors in Italy and France, Dandelion Chandler and Cifonelli, respectively. My ring wear is made in Los Angeles by Manuel Quiroz.
Clara: I know Cifonelli. They usually specialize in men’s wear.
UVR: They also make women’s attire, but it is lesser known. I prefer a more practical style, I suppose one would say.
Clara: So back to the topic at hand, you submitted an application and this role fell into your lap as a result?
UVR: Not quite. Nearly a year passed before any mention was made of me having even applied. I had actually forgotten about it until suddenly I received a package with an offer at the start of the global pandemic. I made phone calls to confirm the offer and as with all of my affairs in life, I made the appointed time for the interview. I was surprised to learn that the character of Erica De Lange was written specifically for someone of my build and disposition.
Clara: A role tailor-made for you like the clothes you wear.
UVR: Indeed.
Clara: We’re going to show a clip now of you wrestling in Southern Rebellion Wrestling where you are their top champion currently.
Both women turn their gaze to a viewing screen off camera. The moment fades to black and cuts to reveal an excerpt from SRW’s “Savage Thursday” dated 6/18/2020.
“Halo brings her arms up as Ursula Von Rossbach pummels her mercilessly on the canvas with violent and hard rights and lefts! Suddenly Halo is pulled out from under her and through the ropes to the outside by B-Brat, who quickly pulls her battered and now bleeding from the nose friend to safety, checking her over. Back in the ring, Ursula stands, practically fuming at the two. She backs up a few feet, then gets a running start. B-Brat sees the train coming and shoves Halo aside in a sacrifice move that sees her taking the full on force of a SUICIDE CORKSCREW AERIAL TERMINATION!!!! The sight of Ursula twisting and turning in mid air to hit a backflip moonsault over the ropes gets a huge pop from the crowd!”
We return to the interview with Clara looking in shock and greater awe than before.
Ursula’s response is non-chalant in delivery.
UVR: That is what I do for a living, Mrs. Channing.
Clara: So I imagine you did all of your own stunts on Time Split then?
UVR: Almost all of them. There were some moments involving CGI, but only because they were realistically impossible to do practically. Again, I cannot reveal too much until after the film has aired.
Clara: Naturally of course. Being that you are a phenomenal wrestler but an otherwise untrained actress, what were some of the hurdles you faced in portraying this role?
There is a moment of contemplation as Ursula considers a few different answers.
UVR: Remembering lines and where to stand for some shots were a couple of minor issues. The cast was quite phenomenal to work with. Mr. Hawkins proved himself to be a more capable actor than I would have given him credit for and Morgan Payne did very well herself. I am certain there will be a blooper reel of me flubbing constantly. The only consolation I have is that this is my first time acting, therefore, errors are to be expected.
Clara: How would you rate your first experience in the acting profession?
UVR: Largely positive, though the director was fairly unforgiving of mistakes.
Clara: Paul Vanderlin is a known television and documentary director and is currently helming the Time Split film. What difficulties did the two of you have?
UVR: I imagine that directing three professional wrestlers who are used to working with little to no direction in front of a camera would be trying for anyone, especially when none of them are what you would call professional actors. That being said, I did enjoy the experience of being in someone else’s skin, even if they are not too far removed from myself. I do not have Mrs. De Lange’s desire for social standing and influence, for example. I also had to affect even more of an Oxford accent to make Erica more posh than myself, reflecting her higher societal aspirations despite being something of a high society outcast herself due to the fact that she does not fit the mold of a proper lady due to her physique and headstrong nature.
Clara: I am sure that Erica will be a fascinating character. So moving on from that, it sounds as though you had favorable relations with the cast and crew. Were there any other difficulties at all with your costars?
UVR: None. We are all colleagues who are well aware of one another and our individual quirks. The supporting cast did their duties admirably. I feel my costars helped me a great deal with finding my flow while working from a script. If there was any specific problematic moment, I would say it was the shoot of a very tense scene involving myself as Erica, hitting Griffin as Teddy. We would say our lines and the blow would come. Over and over we had to replay this scene as something always seemed off by Director Vanderlin’s assessment. We had already had several grueling shoots that day and it was the last scene to, “go into the can” as veteran filmmakers would put it. This take made it into the film but I slipped and Mr. Hawkins experienced the full force of my fist colliding with his face.
To illustrate, Ursula rears one hand back, balled into a fist, which she then loudly smacks against her open palm as if delivering a haymaker.
UVR: He immediately dropped to the floor and thankfully, his curses were delayed in reaction. For the remainder of the week, he would spend roughly two hours in makeup, sometimes between takes during particularly intensive scenes to hide the bruise. That was a dreadful moment and yet all I heard was Paul’s gleeful cheers in his native Polish that day.
Clara: Oh how terrible! I hope Griffin does not hold a grudge.
Ursula gives a small shrug of her shoulders.
UVR: We are professional wrestlers. He knows that if I was trying to actively hurt him, he would have more to complain about than trouble chewing for a day and a massive bruise on his cheek.
Ms. Channing nods her head in response, then looks to her camera.
Clara: Now we’re almost out of time, but I would like to play a small excerpt of your performance from Time Split. This show is still in shooting and this scene may or may not make it into the final cut. Here it is.
“The office is dimly lit as Erica De Lange stands in front of a large plate-glass window, staring out over what looks to be a marina as she sips her coffee. The business suited aristocrat’s day was just coming to an end as indicated by the sun setting below the city skyline in the distance. Her cell phone rings on the ultra modern black and chrome desk.
EDL: Alexa, answer.
The phone makes an agreeable chirp followed by a man’s voice on speakerphone, desperate and harried.
Man: You’re meddling with forces beyond your comprehension, don’t do this!
Erica arches her brow and finishes the last of her cup of coffee, setting it down on a nearby end table.
The familiarity is readily apparent as she knows the voice all too well on the other end.
Man: You don’t understand! You could wreck the very fabric of time and space itself!
She clasps her hands behind her back, head lowered, then turns to face the desk and walks towards it with a somber expression upon her face. In her eyes is a hint of sadness.
EDL: It is you, who does not understand. Tell me, old friend, if you had the power to erase a dreadful mistake, would you take it? Would you pursue everything in your power to keep your dearest blood from being shed and lost?
There is a pause, allowing the man on the other end to speak.
Man: Erica, I’m telling you right now, destroy th-
Her hand slams down on the desk with enough force to crack the hardened black wood top.
EDL: Excuse me? I do not believe I require instruction from you. The launch will go off and every regret I have will be swept away. I will be who I was destined to be and not you or anyone else will stop me from achieving my goal…
Before he can speak, she ends the call. Reaching into her desk, she reaches inside, rummaging a bit to find a small photograph. Slowly she eases down into her desk chair, her face haggard and filled with remorse, studying the young face of the dark haired man staring back at her.
EDL: I will undo the cruelty of fate that befell us, my love… We will be together again, ruling this kingdom side by side as was intended.
With a single tear rolling down an otherwise impassive face from the corner of Ursula’s watery eyes, the scene comes to an end.”
Carla gives Ursula a little clap as they fade back in.
Carla: And here I thought that you said you didn’t know how to act.
She is given a small nod in response.
UVR: I may have borrowed a few issues from my closet as it were.
Carla: Is there anything you would like to say to the viewers and your fans? Any projects coming up?
Ursula nods her head and turns to face the camera.
UVR: You may find me live on Southern Rebellion Wrestling, One Wrestle Movement, and Uprising through streaming networks of Twitch, Splat Media, and Rebel Productions Incorporated. This Friday on the 30th of July, I face the leader of the Covenant, Asmodeus Iscariot at the Rebel Star Arena for SRW and on August 14th, I will be attending Uprising’s Total Anarchy, where I face the Supreme Machine for the Total Anarchy Championship. While I am not booked for 1WM’s Stockholm Syndrome event, I do believe everyone watching this should also tune in as well for the world wide broadcast.
Carla: That has been Ursula Von Rossbach. Again, thank you so much for coming in today.
UVR: Thank you for having me, Mrs. Channing.
The two rise, giving each other a small fist bump as has become customary in pandemic times. The interview effectively ends here.
